Why, you ask?
Answer: HUMAN NATURE.
The Trucking Industry is a massive industry. There are many areas to work and specialize in. The big trucks you see everyday on the nations highways account for around 3 million trucks out of a total of 8 million vocational trucks working every day in this country.
There are a lot of trucks you don’t see.
So, let’s be clear when I say that husband/wife team drivers are the most sought after drivers in trucking… I’m talking about in the area of trucking called OTR.
OTR (over-the-road), also called “long-haul”, is the area where teams are most valuable to trucking companies.
There are many reasons why this true. I’ll cover a significant reason in this post.
Let’s say a client has a load coming out of New York, going to California. A team is the perfect choice. If a solo driver could run that load in 4 days, a team can do it in 2, or even less. That said…
Long-haul drivers, even teams created by putting two drivers together by the company, tend to suffer most from loneliness. Spending days, weeks and in some cases months, on the road, means drivers miss their family and friends.
Think loneliness isn’t a big deal?
…think again.
Missing the people you love… is a very big deal.
In the trucking industry overall, long-haul solo drivers, who spend long periods of time alone, experience 15 times higher rates of depression than the average American.
Happy drivers are more relaxed.
More relaxed drivers are safer drivers on the road.
Safer drivers are good for everyone.
Human beings are social creatures that benefit from being around people they love… who love them.
Husband/wife driving teams don’t suffer from loneliness when out on the road because they’re with the person they love.
A truck can be a comfortable, cozy place to be when set up right. My husband and I made the effort to create a comfortable environment in our team trucks. We made sure we had a nice, comfortable mattress, along with a variety of items that make life over-the-road easier on a daily basis from cooking and cleanup items to personal computers and more.
When company’s put two random drivers in a team truck — loneliness can still be an issue since both drivers are missing their loved ones.
Married or same-household teams naturally have an easier time being on the road for longer periods of time because they’re with their significant other. There are many more reasons why husband/wife teams are the most sought after drivers in trucking.
